        The country was created by the unification of the British Somaliland (North) & the Italian Somalia (East) in 1960. The light blue represents the flag of the UNO (that administrated Somalia from 1948 til 1960) but light blue is also the traditional color of the whole Somali people. The white star stands for freedom & its five points for the five countries where the Somalis are scattered : Somaliland, Somalia, Etiopia, Djibouti & Kenya. The present pattern was adopted on 12 OCTOBER 1954 & kept for the independence on 1 JANUARY 1960.
