flag of JULY 1945    (ORIGINAL DOCUMENT)

            Ralph KELLY's quotation :

(The image comes from the article titled "National Title, National Flag, National Anthem", published in the Tin Moi newspaper, issue 1654, dated 28 JUNE 1945.
This drawing was on page 2. The article I had provided a link for, "The National Flag of Viet Nam : Its Origin and Legitimacy" by Nguyễn Đình Sài refers to the same newspaper article, but it appears that he only looked at page 1, which did not have the drawing.
Accordingly he created what can now be regarded as the wrong design by using only the written description !
So the revised drawing of the Que Ly flag with shortened trigram is correct, though it appears that the shade of yellow should be a darker yellow than others are showing.)

TONKIN / BAC KY (North split off from DAI NAM becomes French Protectorate of TONKIN by Treaty of Hué, signed on 25 August 1883, confirmed on 6 June 1884) :

+        1920-1945    (Emperor Khai Dinh changed the flag to symbolise the North and Central regions. The flag is called Long Tinh Kÿ.)

+        1885    (Emperor Ham Nghi, aged 14, fled the French army, in the jungle near Laos with his regent, continuing a guerrilla war against the French)

1942    (poster saying : "The Marshal said : Great France is closely linked to peace, like the country people are to their fields”.)    (The 3 equal stripes 'd be called “artistic licence".)

December 1942    (Pétain's sports venue in Ninh Binh province)    (This December 1942 photograph clearly shows the wider stripes of the 1920 flag.)

1941    (pages from a 1941 booklet on the flags, arms & hymns of Indochina - confirms the 1920 flag of DAI NAM / TONKIN)

1941    (BONUS / same 1941 booklet - great Imperial dragon flag)

ANNAM / TRUNG KY (Center split off from DAI NAM & merged with former Kingdom of CHAMPA becomes French Protectorate of ANNAM by Treaty of Hué, signed on 25 August 1883, confirmed on 6 June 1884) :

                +        1923-1945    (colonial + local flag)

                1885    (colonial flag)

COCHINCHINA / NAM KY (MEKONG DELTA becomes French Protectorate of COCHINCHINA by Treaty of Saigon, signed on 5 June 1862, confirmed on 15 March 1874) :

                +        1862-1945    (colonial + local flag)

Note #1 : I dezigned my NAM KY 1862 acordin to the last flag displayed on this chart as it seems to be the MOST COHERENT Vietnameze flag lookin to me.

Note #2 : This very flag just below is VERY often displayed as "COCHINCHINA" quite everywhere.

ERROR ERROR ERROR ERROR : COCHINCHINA MY FUCKIN BIG NOZE !!!!!

Some BAD vexillologs date this very flag from the early 18° century flag-charts the flag of the Nguyen lords.

I found this chart here : www.amazon.com/CHINESE-COCHIN-CHINA-Imperial-Standard-Cochinechine/dp/B00NV5TBLA Amazon date it from 1873.

Here : commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cochin_China._Johnson%27s_new_chart_of_national_emblems,_1868.jpg     WikiMERDIA date it from 1868.

Found here : www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/4inix0/1858_us_flag_chart_depiction_of_a_cochinchina     Reddit date it from 1858.

Note #3 : another source shows it like this old German chart, for instance :

                I found this chart here : www.pinterest.fr/pin/193303008980180897

    BUT I GOT A SCOOP !!!!    I quote :

"About the strange flag of Cochinchina - the one with a large red-yellow spiral in center and many small charges scattered around. Well, I know that flag very well, but as the flag of CHINA - typically, no COCHIN in the name. It is appearing as a flag of China in many flag charts from the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as in the "Encyclopedia" by Diderot & D'Alembert. Yes, there are a (smaller) number of charts which do say it is a flag of Cochinchina, but I think that it was an error made by someone and then copied by others. The problem arose because two names were confused : Portuguese took Malay name for Vietnam - Kuchi - and turned it into Cochin, but that was also the name of a city in south India (also the state whose capital it was, which survived as a Princely State until 1947), so they added the name of China to make difference (Vietnam was a Chinese vassal at the time). It is possible that someone did see Chinese flags in Vietnam, but did not realize that they were Chinese, and those people were the source of information for the makers of those charts (who should have better copied from older charts which did say the flag was Chinese). In short, that was an unnecessary correction. Also note that, while those charts were being produced, the charts with the flag presented as Chinese were also being made, so the error was not universally accepted. About the flag design, I think it was a European attempt to reproduce complex Chinese flags which displayed dragons among the clouds, but the flags were so complex that the Europeans did not realize what was actually displayed. In later charts - 19th century - when people realized that Chinese flag bears a dragon, the flag with a spiral was no longer included, which seems to speak in favour of my idea."

A great thank toward Tomislav TODOROVIC, the Serb vexillolog who discovered the mystery of it all and told me the whole stuf. Hvala, Tomislav !!

            VEXILLO NOTE :

Unlike on SHIT FOTW, the KKNLF flag is drawn EXACTLY after the followin fotos    :

NOTICE  when I saw thoze fotos for the first time, I immediately thought the wheel should be reversed just like this    :

BUT when you take a GOOD look, the stars are up side down.... just like this    :

SO my ONLY conclusion is the (idiot) guys from the KKNLF have hoisted THEIR OWN flag up side down !!!!!!!!!!

A very HUGE thank to Ralph KELLY + Mello LUCHTENBERG + Tomislav TODOROVIC for their VERY BIG help.

            + 1 EXTRA FLAG :

After a serious investigation from this sepia foto of the BLACK FLAG ARMY (1860's-1885), we could have been able to REDRAW it. This PERFECT drawing has been made by Mello LUCHTENBERG. DANKU MELLO.

The Chineze ideogram 令 means "Command" or "Order". The flag seems to be the personal command flag of Liu Yongfu.

ALTERNATE #1 : A Black Flag banner, captured by the French at Hoa Moc (2 MARCH 1885) and now displayed in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris   (This is my favorite one !!!!)

ALTERNATE #2 : A possible reconstruction of Liu Yongfu's command flags at Sơn Tây

ALTERNATE #3 : Notice that version has very probably just NEVER existed but.... to me it's the most beautiful color combination. I INVENTED IT BECAUSE I DO LOVE IT !!!!

            + 1 EXTRA BONUS FLAG :

MARKO's project for a nor monarkist neither comunist (flag of) VIETNAM.
