Tanganika became independent from the UK in 1961 & Zanzibar in 1963. The United Republic chose another new flag based on the fusion of both. It must be noticed that the then flag of Zanzibar was a horizontal triband black/yello/blue. Tanganika's flag was quite same but green/black/green with yello fimbriations. Green is the land; black is the people; blue is the ocean; the fimbriations in yello stand for the mineral wealth of the country. The present pattern was adopted on 30 JUNE 1964.
NB : Lake "Victoria" is
the colonial name. The local name is UKEREWE.
But nobody gives a fuck (as usual).

PRECISION
ABOUT TANGANIKA 1895-1920 :
WikiMERDIA shows the flag
with proportions 2:3 as we can see here > de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsch-Ostafrikanische_Gesellschaft
Yet it has always been a
typical German ratio 3:5.

NOTE : This flag is very often called "Zanzibar independentist flag of 1856".... but it's NOT !!! It seems (with NO certainty) it was actualy the flag of the Omani Yarubid dynasty that ruled Oman from 1624 till 1749.
1730-1744 ???? (flag of the Omani Yarubid dynasty rulin over Zanzibar - putative flag anyway as Oman flag
from 1650 till 1868 is a.... PLAIN
RED FLAG)
It's important to notice
this
very flag comes from Wikimerdia (drawn 2006) and said to be
based on a
drawing in “Die Wappen und Flaggen der Herrscher und Staaten der
Welt"
by Johann Ambrosius SIEBMACHER (1561 – 1611). SIEBMACHER
described it as “Flag of the ancient Sultanate of Zanzibar”. BUT
Hubert
DE VRIES displays it (dezigned with a swallow tail) and he
identifies
it as flag of the Omani Yarubid dynasty 1730 - 1744. DE VRIES
sources
the dezign from a Hollander chart from the 1700's under the name
"Pav:
de Sangrian" (SIC). BUT Alamy has an image of that very flag
which it
categorizes under "Moroccan stripes", with the image of Sangrian
from
"A display of the naval flags of all nations” published by
Fisher, Son
& C° in 1838. BUT the great Whitney SMITH includes it in a
list of
Philippine provinces, whilst it may be a former part of Morocco,
based
on the surrounding flags. So.... does anybody know wot was that
mysterious flag !!??
IMPORTANT DETAIL
: ZANZIBAR January-April 1964 flag was EXACTLY like this :
and NOT like
that :
Indeed : this was the flag of the Afro-Shirazi Party (1957-1977)
variant of
the Afro-Shirazi
Party adorned with a yello hoe
The thin ridiculous white band was added at the hoist of ZANZIBAR to make the diference from the Afro-Shirazi Party flag as "a sign of pacification”. The white stripe was 1/36 of the length of the flag.
The thin ridiculous white band is very often forgotten and the Afro-Shirazi Party flag is very often displayed BY MISTAKE as the flag of ZANZIBAR.
Notice that, in spite of its shape, the yello tool in the center of the flag is NOT a Native-American tomahawk but an African hoe !!!!
SAME STUF ABOUT TANGANIKA
: TANGANIKA 1961-1964 flag was like this :
and not like that :
Indeed : this was the flag of the Tanganyika African National
Union (TANU) party (1954-1977)
The thin 2 yello stripes were added on the flag of TANGANIKA to make the diference from the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) party flag.
Unlike
some fashion mental disease that "decided" to change the colors
of both Tanzania & Zanzibar, the shade of the blue IS STILL
THE SAME
