Red & white are often used in South East Asia. In this case these two colors are said to embody universal brotherhood, purity & virtue. The flag was adopted in 1959 as Singapore was still a British colony. It was retained in 1963 when it became one of the 14 States of the Federation of Malaysia. It was kept when the country left the federation. The present pattern was adopted on 3 December 1959 and oficialy confirmed on 9 AUGUST 1965.
