Inspired from the French Tricolor, the flag dates from 1848 as
the national emblem of the struggle against the Turkish
ocupation. Yet the bands became vertical only in 1866. Blue
& yello represent Wallachia while blue & red stand for
Moldavia, two main regions of Romania. Durin a long period the
flag bore several royal & comunist coats of arms. The last
one was dropped in 1989. The present pattern was adopted on 27
DECEMBER 1989.
