The former monarkist flag was blue & white (cf Azores). As green & red were the republican colors they were chosen for the new flag after the proclamation of the republic in 1910. It's often said green stands for hope while red reprezents the revolution. They actualy come from the red flagz hoisted by the Portugueze revolutionaries in 1891. The shield itself reminds the ancient victories against the Arabs while the armillary sphere symbolizes the maritime heritage of the country. The present pattern was adopted on 30 JUNE 1911.
