Accordin to the tradition the strugglin leader general Jose de San Martin saw a flight of pink flamingos when he arrived in Peru in 1820. As he considered it as a good omen, he decided to chose red & white as the colors of his army. They remained these of the country. Alike almost all the flags of Latin America, the State flag is adorned with the coat of arms that displays a lama, a kinkina & a horn of plenty. The present pattern was adopted on 25 FEBRUARY 1825.

theres at least 2 various coats of arms / flags.
(version #1 with a basis made of a fasces, a scroll bearin the name ESTADO NOR-PERUANO, military and some other stuf)
(version #2 with a classical coat of arms BUT ADORNED ON THE TOP WITH A GLOWIN SUN)
The 3 pictures above come from the page PERU of Hubert DE VRIES website > hubert-herald.nl/INHOUD.htm
#1 #2 So I must say I dont know WHICH flag was actualy in use for the Republic of South Peru from 1836 till 1839. Was it #1 or #2 or both ????
VEXILLO NOTE : The flag of TACNA is quite a failure as it's just only a small shield on a plain yello flag !!!! It'd be by far much vexillo correct & estheticaly better that way :
> Notice I M NOT a Photoshoper !!!! So my draft loox a lil bit awful but that's the idea of wot TACNA flag SHOULD REALY look like.
