Panama
had been part of Colombia till 1903. At that date the USA
acknoledged the independence of the country (in order to get the
control over the future canal). Notice the independence of
PANAMA was wanted by the USA in order to control the canal zone.
The colors refer on purpose to the Yankee flag instead of this
of Colombia. Blue & red represent the then political parties
& white is for peace. The red star is the law while the blue
one is honesty & loyalty. The present pattern was adopted on
20 DECEMBER 1903.

AS USUAL WIKIMERDIA IS JUST SHIT (part 2) :
VS
DEFINITELY 7 STRIPES - The
proposal used the Colombian colors.... but it loox
like a mixture of Spain & USA !!!
The source is here > www.prensa.com/impresa/opinion/Discordia-bandera_0_778422213.html
Notice, as annoying is that the people of this website want us to log in and we don't want to, so here's the page in its original Española version added with an English translation. Enjoy !!
"The
best info source seems to be Whitney Smith who
wrote the Panama flag profiles for Encyclopedia
Britannica and World Book’s Encyclopedia of Flags.
The FOTW comment by Ivan Sache refers to the
Dorling Kindersley book The Ultimate Pocket Flags
of the World by Siobhan Ryan, who would also has
sourced her flag info from Whitney Smith.
Whitney Smith says that the original flag design
proposal used the colours of the Columbian flag,
though the new government regarded the stripes
with canton as “too American”. They adopted
the red, white, blue flag with stars, which is
also regarded as having been derived from the
American flag !
Whitney Smith states that the flag design had
seven horizontal stripes and the image of two
yellow suns linked together on the blue
canton. These were intended to represent the
linking of the two oceans by the future Panama
Canal.
The version using 13 stripes seems to be an
invention / misunderstanding by Jaume Ollé, which
has been picked up by Wikipedia."
- DEFINITELY
7 STRIPES but WHY 7.... Who knows why 7 !?

Los Santos has adopted a flag (the orange one) in
2011....

1850 has been readopted.
