In the past the sultanate was usin the plain red flag of the Karijites. The present one was adopted when Oman gained its independence from the UK. Red is still the traditional color, white represents peace, green is fertility. White is also the traditional color of the imam & green the one of the hadji. The arms display the Gambia (traditional dagger) on two crossed swords. The original pattern was adopted in 1970 but the bands were rearranged to make 1/3 each one instead of 2/5, 1/5, 2/5 formerly & the ratio 2:3 was turned 1:2. The present version was adopted on 18 NOVEMBER 1995.
