            The flag is directly inspired from the British Blue Ensign of Australia of which Nauru used to be a colony. The blue field is the Pacific Ocean; the yello line is the equator (the island bein just beneath); the white sun stands for the island itself. The 12 rays represent the 12 tribes of the country. The present pattern was adopted on 31 JANUARY 1968.
