The French Tricolor strikes again ! This triband (same as Italy) is this of the independentist movement that struggled against the Spanish rule. Green stands for freedom of sect, white for the independence from Spain, red for the unity of the country. It was adopted as the national flag in 1821 but both eagle & cactus are ancient symbols : accordin to an Aztec legend Tenochtitlan (Mexico) was founded on the very place where an eagle would have been seen on a cactus, killin a snake. The present pattern (with this latest version of arms) was adopted on 17 SEPTEMBER 1968.
