            NOTE #1 : This very flag is highly dubious and has probably NEVER been uzed or even NEVER existed. Roberto BRESCHI states "the flag is much disputed" here. So I do NOT display it in my timeline.

                "colonial TRIPOLITANIA 1918-1922 (Italy)" Some people consider it as the flag of an independent Tripolitanian Republic.... uzin the colonial coat of arms !!!! IT'S JUST CREAZY.

                The coat of arms of colonial Italian Tripolitania was granted on 3 APRIL 1919. So HOW could have it been uzed as a flag in 1918.... and by an independentist structure !!!!????

            NOTE #2 : Theres a "big headache" with the eternal question : Was it white or yello crescents ?" !!!! So what can we say about that ?

            There was likely to have been a gradual transition from white to yellow crescents. The flag's appearance on charts gives an indication of when this happened. Changes can be slow to appear in historical charts and a flag can appear on charts up to a decade after a change actually happened. A chart published in the French Encyclopaedia of Diderot et d'Alembert use of a gold crescent could reflect a 19° century addition. Prior to 1869 when the Colton series of flag charts changed from white to yellow, there had only been 3 charts with a yellow flag. During that same period there were 28 charts with a white crescent. After 1869 there were 6 charts with a white crescent (the last being 1887), whilst there were 5 charts with a yellow crescent (the last being 1886). For some charts there were two flags, but they were clearly identified as that of the sultan (white) and another for Tripoli (usually yellow). Therefore, the changeover from white to yellow is likely to have happened on or a little before 1869. 1867 was the year that Egypt was recognised as a Khedivate (and changing its flag). A similar administrative change occurred in Tripolitania when it was changed from an Eyalet to the Vilayet of Tripolitania as part of a general Ottoman administrative reform. It is plausible that the local flag was changed from white to yellow crescents, in the same way that Egypt changed its flag upon becoming a Khedivate.

            NOTE #3 : We know TRIPOLITANIA was independent (or at least self ruled) from 1421 till 1510 but was there any flag durin that period ???? The Czek vexillolog Josef HUBKA published in the journal VEXILOLOGIE #161 from September 2011 : "The oldest flags documented for the region of Libya were those of Tripoli - a green field charged with a white crescent, and that of Benghazi in Cyrenaica…. They were rendered in colour on the map of the Mediterranean Sea and adjacent territories by the cartographer Ibrahim of Tripoli in 1462." Notice Ibrahim of Tripoli's real name is Ibrahim MÜRSELIN. So the vexillolog Josef HUBKA thinks it was green with a white crescent but the vexillolog Hubert DE VRIES thinks it was a plain red flag. Hmmmm.... it's quite hard to find out !!!!

                ....but the quality of Ibrahim MÜRSELIN's portulan is so ugly that it's hard to see a white crescent on green flagz !

            NOTE #4 : The 1375 Catalan Atlas (here a small part very kindly provided by Ralph KELLY) is very interestin & show us particularly the flag of the independent sultanate of TRIPOLITANIA that existed since 1327.

                Notice there are two different flags : with red keys for Tripoli and without for the towns on the Trans-Saharan caravan routes in modern Niger. Obviously they have some shared origin but there is simply no information.

            NOTE #5 : On this detail of the 1375 Catalan Atlas we can see the shape of both Hafsid dynasty (first + second period). However one question remains : the red flag with a golden crescent loox 100% like Hafsid 1401.... but the Catalan Atlas dates from 1375 : so it's impossible for the Atlas to show a flag that does not exist at that time ! And the yello (golden) flag with a white crescent loox 100% like Hafsid 1248.... but the Catalan Atlas dates from 1375 : so I think it's impossible for an Atlas to show a flag 127 years old and replaced in 1327 by the white flag with the green palm tree !! I must say I dont understand this mistery !!!! Heres a possible explanation by Ralph KELLY. I quote our dear "Chief Superintendent" Ralphie (!) :

"The Hafsid Kingdom existed during the period 1229 to 1574 and was based in the area of modern Tunisia, extending to Algeria and Libya. World Statesmen.org dates the Hafsid control of Tunis to period 1236 to 1531. Tripoli was incorporated into Tunis during the period 1248-1327, and then 1401-1482. So, there is no reason why Tripoli could not use the existing Hafsid flag that was in use in Tunis prior to Hafsid gaining control of Tripoli. There is no inconsistency in dates.

I don't know why there would be two different flags for the same period over different parts of the Hafsid Kingdom. The red flag with yellow crescent has it's flagpole anchored on the city of Tunis. The yellow flag with white crescent has its flagpole anchored on what would appear to be the city of Gabbes. Both are in modern and historical Tunisia. I have suggested that the yellow flag relates to the Hafsid dysnasty in the 1248-1327 period, whilst the red and yellow flag could be for the 1401-1412 period. The main reason for that was to show two different flags for the Hafsid. You had originally used this red and yellow flag for 1551-1610 period. I am of the opinion that the yellow and white flag with horse is false, but a yellow flag with crescent could be OK, but unclear as to period. Did the Hafsid flag change from yellow to red (when?) or did it have two flags? - who knows. Hop into your TARDIS and check it out."

Ralphie is absolutely right : it's sometimes just IMPOSSIBLE to know EXACTLY some things about some flagz. Our dear Mello LUCHTENBERG told me the same. So, as some kind of conclusion, I D say reality is stil often frustrating !
