Its triband is inspired both from this of the Netherlands (of which Luxembourg was part till 1867) & the French Tricolor (again!) but the colors come from the arms of the duchy (a gules lion over silver & azure burelles) which would date back from 1288. In order not to be confused with the Dutch flag the shade of the blue is lighter & the ratio is 3:5 instead of 2:3 (which is not very visible!). The present pattern was adopted on 12 June 1845, forbidden by the nazis in 1942 (becauze they had annexed the country), restored in 1945 & confirmed later on 16 AUGUST 1972.
