Yankee president Monroe (that's why the capital is named Monrovia) proposed to create an independent State in Afrika in order to establish a homeland for freed African slaves (so they say). The country was settled in 1822 & called Liberia. The flag is inspired from the Stars & Stripes (obviously!) but the eleven stripes are said to stand for the eleven guys who signed Liberia's Declaration of Independence. The canton was then bearin a white cross which was later replaced by a star to look more like the original design. The idiot Yankee ratio 10:19 was kept exactly for the Liberian flag. The present pattern was adopted on 26 JULY 1847.
