          From 1391 the flag of Kingdom of Raigam was red with a golden symbolic animal on it. By 1412 the flag of Kingdom of Kotte was red with a golden symbolic lion holdin a whip in his right hand. In 1469 the flag of Kingdom of Kandy was red with a golden lion holdin a sword in his right hand. In 1521 the flag of Kingdom of Sitawaka had a very similary flag. So it's quite naturaly that the country adopted a red (turned 3 yearz later into crimson/red-brown) flag with a yello lion when Ceylon (the former name of Sri Lanka till 1972) became independent from the UK in 1948. The 4 very weird stufs in the corners are to be 4 yello silhouettes of a budist pagoda named "koth". In 1951 two bands were added to satisfy both fuckin sects of muslims (green) & hindu tamils (orange). When the country was renamed Sri Lanka in 1972 (Sri means "venerable" in Cinghaleze and Sri Lanka might mean "Venerable Lion") four leaves of a pipul tree (a budist symbol) were put in the corners to replace the 4 weird former silhouettes. The present pattern was adopted on 22 MAY 1972.
