           The flag dates from 1882 & became official in 1883. Some sources even state it could date back from 1874. It was slightly different from this version. Korea was occupied by Japan from 1910 till 1945. The Japanese yoke fell in 1945 but a war started in 1948 betwin the North (supported by the Soviet Union) & the South (supported by the USA). This war ended in 1953 with the ignominious partition of Korea. On the Taeguk (name of the flag) white is for peace & purity, the Yin Yang represents concepts of creation & development thru duality (so they say). The four Kwae symbolize the four seasons, the four compass points & the four elements. The present pattern was officially specified on 15 OCTOBER 1949, adopted on 25 JANUARY 1950 & shifted on 21 FEBRUARY 1984.

                This is DEFINITELY NOT KOREA 1882 national flag. This is the royal standard of King -then Emperor- Kojong from 1882 to 1907. The central emblem is not a Yin Yang but a Eum Yang.
