The Hino Maru is probably the oldest flag still in use (with the Dannebrog). It would date back from the 11° century. The sun is the medieval symbol of the emperor. The name of the country itself Nippon means "The Land of the Risin sun". Thou it is a very old symbol it was not adopted as a flag oficialy before mid 19° century. The very famous warflag is also white with a red roundel but added of 16 red rays. The present pattern was oficialy adopted on 5 AUGUST 1854.

KARIYASU's answer : This colored kamon is fake! The wikipedia image is wrong.
The Japanese family emblem is basically expressed in monochrome because it does not specify a color. If the kimono is brown, the family emblem is drawn in brown and white, not black and white.
This is done in a flexible manner depending on the purpose of use.

MARKO's remark : I like it much more than the "normal one" (with no yello disc). I find that warm yello disc (both the color & the shape) really highlights the kamon.
But it's just personal taste. Is it a "western" fancy or does this version has existed exist ????

KARIYASU's remark : Again the Westren style colored mon was introduced after 1868 Meiji Restoration. If you see the colored kamon before 1868 period that is fake regardless of personal taste.
