The very first proposal was so close to the flag of Tanganika that it was turned into this design with a saltire. Black represents the hardships & the people; yello is the natural resource & the sun as well; green is for agriculture & hope. The present pattern was adopted on 6 AUGUST 1962 when Jamaica gained its so called independence from the UK.

AND, AS
USUAL, WIKIMERDIA IS JUST SHIT :
NOTE :
The College of Arms warrant describes the Taino people as "West
Indian natives ... girt about the waist with feathers alternating
Gules and Argent". "Flags, Badges & Arms of His
Majesty's Dominions Beyond the Seas and of Territories Under His
Majesty's Protection - Part II - Arms (1932)" has a drawing of the
arms and the full blazon. So officially it should be red and white. The
crocodile is described as coloured "proper" and was drawn on the
1932 arms in brown, as is the Jamaican government's current
drawing.
Le
crocodile est mignon !!!!

Confirmed on The Jamaican Government website here : jis.gov.jm/information/symbols and here : jis.gov.jm/symbols/jamaican-coat-of-arms
This confirms it too !!!!
Image from WikiMERDIA with
fancy colors for JAMAICA COA 1962 (with the new
motto).
As it SHALL be as
described by The College of Arms in 1932. Red & white, NO
fancy red & yello, NO orange top feathers !!!!
Image from WikiMERDIA with fancy colors for JAMAICA COA 1957 (with the old motto). As it SHALL be as described by The College of Arms in 1932. Red & white, NOT fancy red & green.
Image from WikiMERDIA with fancy colors for JAMAICA COA 1906 (with NO helmet & mantling). As it SHALL be closer approximate to the historical badges as shown in old British Admiralty books.
Red & white, NOT fancy red & light blue.
The arm was then bent and the bow has been repositioned.
Notice the 3 top red feathers do not exist in 1906.
Image from WikiMERDIA with fancy colors for JAMAICA COA 1875 (with only an ovale shield). As it IS in the 1889 edition of the British Admiralty's Flags of the World.
Un très grand merci à Ralph KELLY, décidément LE MEILLEUR.
