The colors date back from 1293 & were considered as sacred at that time. They became the national colors & were used as a flag in 1922 as the emblem of independence against the Nederland colonisation, as the country was then ruled by the Dutch East India Company since 1619. It's called Mera Puti which means "Red White". It was first hoisted in Java in 1928 & then adopted on 17 AUGUST 1945 four years before the independence was officially claimed. The flag is called the Bendera Pusaka (“Heirloom flag”) and the very first was sewn by hand by Fatmawati, the First Lady. It became the official flag in 1949 when Indonesia gained its freedom from Nederland (which created some kind of tension with Monaco's piece of shit flag, MONACO being 950000 times smaller than INDONESIA. They dont fear nothin in Monaco !!!!).

BALI - independentist or local
flag ???? - I drew this flag
after this foto :
BALI - At least, it's NOT the
Hollander vlag repeated thrice !!!
Note #1 by Tomislav TODOROVIC : "On second thought, I am not sure that the color is blue - looks more like black to me (very dark gray, as it may appear on the photos). The flags from Bali are usually in red, white and black. These colors are not borrowed from the Batak flag, but from Hinduism - they stand for the Trisakti (local name for the Trimurti), although I am not quite sure which color stands for which god - in India, red would be for Brahma, white for Vishnu and black for Shiva, although the latter two might have "swapped their gods" in Bali. Actually, the colors of the Batak flag(s) might have also been borrowed from Hinduism, but as the religion has faded away from most of Indonesia, Sumatra included, they received other meanings. That might have happened while Hinduism was still widespread in Indonesia, actually, and its disappearance from Sumatra only made that symbolism be forgotten."
BALI - The Hollander vlag
repeated thrice can be visible in this BALI variant flag, but blue
is replaced by blak. The blak stripes + the red & white ones
are taken from the Batak People flag. Red over white reminds the
national Indonesian flag.
I
like this flag very much !!!!
BATAK PEOPLE, located in NORTH SUMATRA province
- I drew this flag after this foto :
BATAK PEOPLE - The Upper World
(Banua Ginjang) where the gods live = white, the Middle World
(Banua Tonga) where the mortals live = red, the Lower World (Banua
Toru) where the spirits and ghosts live = black.
other meaning of the flag -
white = truth, red = bravery, black = leadership
Note #2 by Tomislav
TODOROVIC : "And when speaking about the Batak flags,
white-red-black is not the most widespread one - if you Google
BENDERA BATAK (all lowercase), you get a number of photos of
red-white-black flags, a few photos of white-red-black ones, and
one of a white-red-black and a black-white-red one. There is
even a red-white-black flag with a narrower white stripe (half
as wide as the other two).
So if we judge after the number of photos, the frequency of
variants is clearly different."
