           The colors date back from 1293 & were considered as sacred at that time. They became the national colors & were used as a flag in 1922 as the emblem of independence against the Nederland colonisation, as the country was then ruled by the Dutch East India Company since 1619. It's called Mera Puti which means "Red White". It was first hoisted in Java in 1928 & then adopted on 17 AUGUST 1945 four years before the independence was officially claimed. The flag is called the Bendera Pusaka (“Heirloom flag”) and the very first was sewn by hand by Fatmawati, the First Lady. It became the official flag in 1949 when Indonesia gained its freedom from Nederland (which created some kind of tension with Monaco's piece of shit flag, MONACO being 950000 times smaller than INDONESIA. The flags from Bali are usually in red, white and black. These colors are not borrowed from the Batak flag, but from Hinduism - they stand for the Trisakti (local name for the Trimurti), although I am not quite sure which color stands for which god - in India, red would be for Brahma, white for Vishnu and black for Shiva, although the latter two might have "swapped their gods" in Bali. Actually, the colors of the Batak flag(s) might have also been borrowed from Hinduism, but as the religion has faded away from most of Indonesia, Sumatra included, they received other meanings.              The WEST MELANESIAN FLAG dates (maybe) from 2002.  It was designed by Dr. Thomas Wapai Wainggai as a flag for the Republic of West Melanesia and later, the West Papua Human Rights Center. It is also intended to represent Melanesian identity more widely, with the 14 stars representing the people of Papua (PNG), Bougainville, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kanaky, Fiji, Torres Strait Islands and West Papua + the 7 traditional districts of West Papua that existed from 1950 to 1962. Thoze 7 traditional districts were the followin 6 : Hollandia (1), Geelvinkbaai (2), Centraal Nieux-Guinea (3), Zuid Nieux-Guinea (4), Fak-Fak (5), West Nieux-Guinea (6) +........ avery mysterious stuf reprezented by the 7° star !!!! This mysterious thing could be for the Princely State of Kaimana, which was in the Fak-Fak department, and allowed to have limited rights, which still exist. Or it may be the island of Misool, in modern South West Papua (south of the Fak-Fak district). Or maybe its just the totality of West Papua. Descriptions of the meaning of the Morning Star flag refer to the 7 blue stripes as the “seven customary territories of the region”. The 14 stars are also said to represent 14 December 1988, when Dr Wainggai declared West Papua the independent state of "West Papua Melanesia”.
