This flag is displayed since 1804 when Haiti became independent from France grace to Toussaint Louverture. Yet the blue-red flag has been in challenge with another blak-red flag since the 1805 Dessaline Empire. The History of Haiti is marked by both flags, the blue-red bein "republican & democratic" while the blak-red bein "monarkist & dictatorial" like the Duvalier dictature for instance. When the Duvalier era collapsed the 1804 blue-red original flag was restored. It's based on the French Tricolor but without the white band (Haiti was a French colony from 1642 till 1804). Blue represents the Blacks while red the Mulattoes. The present pattern was (re)adopted on 25 FEBRUARY 1986.

VEXILLO / HERALDIC NOTE #1 :
Greater coat of arms of King Henri Christophe of Haiti (1811-1820).
The motto of the Kingdom of Haiti is DIEU MA CAUSE ET MON ÉPÉE. This motto MUST NOT be confuzed with Faustin Soulouque's Empire.
Greater coat of arms of Emperor Faustin Élie Soulouque of Haiti (1849-1859).
VEXILLO / HERALDIC NOTE #2 :
King Henri Christophe of Haiti adopted a + simple coat of arms in 1820, the last year of his reign.
motto EX CINERIBUS NASCITUR = I will reborn from my ashes
+ 4 BONUS STUF :
MARKO's
proj for a NEW COA - MUCH SIMPLE (= better) + rememberance toward Haiti's History
MARKO's
proj for a NEW SEAL
To me, putting the WHOLE coat of arms (as it is officially on the flag of Haiti) is a BAD idea as it's too big & too complicated. That's why I think Haiti's flag loox quite horrible with the white square / rectangle with the arms.
MARKO's
proj for a NEW FLAG - MUCH SIMPLE (= better) + rememberance toward Haiti's History
MARKO's
proj ALTERNATE - For ESTHETIC reasons I prefer this one inspired from the flag of 1803.
