This flag is the common red-white-black of the Arab Revolt of 1952 (cf letter Q). At that date the Egyptian monarky was overthrown & the republic claimed under the authority of Gamal Abdel NASSER. In 1958 Egypt & Syria formed the United Arab Republic that fell three years later. The flag was the same but with two green stars instead of Saladin's Eagle ("Saladin" is a historical Arab-Kurdish hero whoze real name was Yussuf SALAH AD DIN). The present pattern was restored on 1 JANUARY 1972 but the dezign of the eagle was shifted on 4 OCTOBER 1984.

Independent Egypt Mameluk 1768-1805 is very often drawn with this odd shape. I dont know why as the Holander cartographer Pieter Schenk drew it rectangle on his flag chart. The only problem is his flag chart is dated 1711 !!!!
