(NB : Colonial frontieres of shit in the whole AFRIKA since the 1885 Conference of Berlin of shit.)

Created by Messali Hadj (or actualy by his wife Émilie Busquant acordin to some sources) in 1928 (or only in 1934 acordin to other sources) as the emblem of the Arab independence in Algeria, this flag was adopted some decades later by the National Liberation Front (NLF in English or FLN - Front de Libération Nationale in French or JTW - Jabhat at Tahrir al Watani in Arab). It became the official flag when the country gained its independence from France. Green is said to stand for islam and white for purity. The star and the crescent are well known symbols of most muslim countries. They are said to be red to symbolize the blood shed for the independence. The present pattern was adopted on 3 JULY 1962.

                                                                                                      capital : ALGIERS

colonial 1830   (France)                                                      1832-1847   (Emirate of Mascara ruled by Abd El Kader)

1488    (Zayanid dynasty restored - Kingdom of Tlemcen)    (new flag)

1424   (Hafsid dynasty restored - Tunis)

1359    (Zayanid dynasty restored - Kingdom of Tlemcen)

1337    (Merinid dynasty - Morocco)    (Notice theres a doubt about the existence of this flag. The Catalan map of 1375 displays the chequer board flag of the Almohad Empire.)

1242   (Hafsid dynasty - Tunis)    Hafsid dynasty is often symbolized by this flag. This flag is 100% WRONG.

1235    (Kingdom of Tlemcen - Zayanid dynasty also named Abdalwadid dynasty)

                1229    (Almohad Empire)

1171    (Ayubid dynasty founded by Saladin - Egypt)

776    (independent Berber kingdom with capital Tahert / now Tiaret - Rustamid dynasty)

698    (Arab conquest - Umayyad Califate)

534    (Byzantine Empire)    (MEANING OF THE BANNER = Σταυρε βασιλεως βασιλεων βασιλει βοηθει = Cross of the King of Kings, aid the King - the King of Kings being, in this case, the Jesus Christ)

                46 BC    (Roman Empire)

                600 BC    (Phenicia)

NOTE #1 : Theres a real doubt about the flag of the 1235 Zayanid Dynasty / Kingdom of Tlemcen. Indeed, look :

1235 Zayanid dynasty                possible alternate #1                 possible alternate #2

As incredible as it may seem, notice the silver on the map has darkened with age to almost black !!!! This flag was interpreted as originally white with a blue crescent.

And theres even possible other alternates accordin to the map of Spain and North Africa published by Pietro VESCONTE in 1325....

A possible alternate #3 (notice the flagpole matches with Oran). The key may refer to its strategic location at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.

A possible alternate #4 (notice the flagpole matches with Algiers). So who realy knows ????

A possible alternate #5 with reversed colors (notice the flagpole matches with Tunis) !!?? So make your choice !!!!

NOTE #2 : The followin flag is often displayed as a "local flag of Algiers" within the Ottoman Empire 1671-1830. This is 100% WRONG !!!! This red flag with a corsair's head was Algiers war ensign from 1714 to 1840.

as we can see it on this flag chart dated 1700's. Yet I dont know if this flag was rectangle or ogival.

Notice several merchant flagz were also uzed by Algiers :

                1720-1794                 possible variant seen on a 1780 chart                 1846-1910

as we can see it on this flag chart dated 1848 by Norrie & Hobbs

Tunis #1 flag is shown on two different sources as "Tunis" and "Andere Algierse Vlag". This was one of the various flags used by the Barbary Coast corsairs (pirates) who operated out of several ports on the North African coastline (modern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya) rather than specifically an official merchant flag of the territory. This would explain the flag appearing in the flag timelines for both Tunisia and Algeria.
