           Czekoslovakia was created on the ruins of the empire of Austria-Hungary in 1918. The first flag was made of two bands white over red (just like Poland) to represent the arms of Bohemia (a silver lion over a gules shield). The blue triangle was added on 30 March 1920 for Slovakia. In 1938 this flag was forbidden by the nazis. It was restored in 1945. When the country split in 1993 a special law stated that the new Czeck Republic shall not adopt the then flag but nevertheless it was done! Now the blue triangle represents Moravia. The present pattern was (re)adopted on 1 JANUARY 1993.
