            This flag started to be used as a federal emblem at the Battle of Arbedo in 1422. It was already acknoledged by the Holy Roman Emperor from 1415. Notice it is very often said the startin point of the Swiss emblem as a red banner adorned with a white cross dates from the Battle of Laupen in 1339 but, after an inquiry, it seems that statement is wrong and shall be forgotten once and for all. The name Schweiz comes from Schwyz, one of the first 3 federated cantons with Unterwalden and Uri in 1291. The Swiss flag present design dates from 1822, was officially adopted in 1848 and the laws about its shape on 12 DECEMBER 1889. The civil ensign exists only since 1941.

            IMPORTANT PRECISION :
            These 3 historical banners do NOT date back from the creation of the Old Swiss Confederacy in 1291 but "only" (!) from 1512. They were ceremonial banners offered as a gift to the cantons by the then pope Julius 2 (whose real name was Giuliano della Rovere) only one year before he died. His pontificate was marked by an active patronage of the arts (rebuilding of St. Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's decoration of the Sistine Chapel, hiring of the artist Raphael to improve the vatican estheticly). The important thing is both the reliable trace of those historical banners and, above all, the extraordinary hand-made quality of their beautiful embroidments.

                    Indeed : as SCHWEIZ was created to become independent from the German Holy Roman Empire (GHRE) and as the GHRE does not exist since 1806, I just cant get why Genève goes on displayin the GHRE eagle on its banner !!!!
