The colors date back from the period of the independence in 1826 but the bands were rearanged a diferent way in 1851. Yet we can already find the same scheme of colorz from the independence of el Estado del Alto Perú proclaimed in January 1825. Estado del Alto Perú was turned into República de Bolívar in August 1825. At last, República de Bolívar was turned into República Boliviana also named República de Bolivia in October 1825. Red represents the valor of the Bolivian soldiers, yello stands for gold & the mineral resources, green is for fertility. There is also another explanation about a typical Bolivian flower named "La Cantuta" which bears these three colors. The present pattern was officially adopted on 14 JULY 1888 thou it is in uze since 1851. In 2009 a second oficial co-flag was adopted. It's named the Wiphala of Kholla Suyu. "Suyu" is the name of the ancient regions of the Inca Empire. Nowadayz Kholla Suyu matches +/- with regions Cochabamba, Oruro & Potosi.

+ 1 BONUS FLAG :
DEPARTAMENTO COCHABAMBA variant with the coat of arms (flag seen quite
often) - NO COA = very ugly / WITH COA =
beautiful. I must say the COA changes ALL !!! The colorz on this drawing are almost CORRECT as they are....
....made after this REAL pattern.
VEXILLO NOTE #1 : The 1825 flag is sometimes / often dezigned copied on the 1785 flag of Spain, just like this : We can find it there > fr.scribd.com/doc/275040963/Las-Tres-Banderas-de-Bolivia But, thou I realy DO LOVE it the "Spanish way" (!), it seems to be made of VERTICAL bands as we can check it out on this foto : Foto found here > correodelsur.com/panorama/20160814_la-bandera-nacional.html
We can see thoze very VERTICAL bands for instance also here > sucre.bo/en-los-195-anos-del-dia-de-la-bandera-boliviana-1825-2020
There also seem to be a 1826 we are not uzed to see. I
must say I M stil very amazed with that flag we could find here (notice
the ratios are ALL WRONG, the Wiphala is WRONG, the SEGUNDO ESCUDO loox
dubious) :
As, for absolutely UNKNOWN REASONS, it's IMPOSSIBLE to get a COMPLETE timeline of Bolivia's coat of arms, I display it here very exceptionally.
I was enormously helped in this task by Mello LUCHTENBERG for the original drawings and by Hubert DE VRIES for the sources. Enjoy !!!!
NOTICE I dont mind if U pick up the drawingz but, if U pick up the drawingz, then U R STEALIN MELLO's WORK. Be aware of that.
Mello's site is here > www.vexilla-mundi.com/index.html while Hubert's site is there > hubert-herald.nl/INHOUD.htm
2004 - A 10° star is added in memory of la Provincia del Litoral, lost in the “unjust war of 1879” (decree 27630, 19 July 2004) and the two-tone bordure half-yello & half-blue (surroundin the seal) becomes ALL BLUE.
1895 - The blue listel is replaced by a blue half-part INSIDE the bordure surroundin the seal. From 1938 the 9° star does not represent la Provincia
del Litoral any+ (lost in 1879 for the benefit of Chile) but the new
departamento of Pando (created 1938). However the 9° star was kept on
the bordure as a remembrance of la Provincia del Litoral durin the period 1879-1938.
14 July 1888 - Inner blue "crescent" with stars replaced by a blue listel OUTSIDE. 6 flagz insted of 4. Phrygian cap, axe, laurel wreath added.
5 November 1851 - The phrygian cap is replaced by a Bolivian Condor. Source :
18 November 1842 - A 8° + a 9° stars are added for Provincia del Litoral + Beni. Source :
adopted on 24 September 1831 - A 7° (golden) star is added for Tarija. Source :
adopted on 26 July 1826 - A 6° (silver) star is added for Oruro. Source :
adopted on 17 August 1825 - The 5 stars represent the 5 territories
that unite to create Bolivia : Chuquisaca, Cochabamba, La Paz, Potosí,
Santa Cruz.
VEXILLO NOTE #3 :
The source image from 1851 shows an odd Bolivian Condor
that loox + like some kind of Napoléon Bonaparte Eagle !!!!"Napoléonic Condor" ! But on this document the Bolivian Condor loox like.... a Bolivian Condor !! coat
of arms 1851
< So I have chosen this condor.... insted of that one !!!! >
Notice I have DROPPED the lower part of the spear of the axe that uzed to hold the FORMER red cap as it makes NO SENSE.... unless the condor got the axe in the ass. Poor condor !!!!
