            The ancient flag of the country was a plain yello flag (color of the sultan). In 1906 two diagonals stripes white over black were added to represent the two vizirs (black represents the official color of the Bendaharas). In 1959 the red coat of arms was added in the center. It represents both islam & the power & authority of the sultan. On the crescent : "Always give service by god's guidance"; on the scroll : "Brunei city of peace". The present pattern was adopted on 29 SEPTEMBER 1959 & kept after the independence in 1984.
