            The country gained its independence from France in 1960 and adopted then a horizontal triband black-white-red in order to represent Black Volta, White Volta & Red Volta (the three rivers of the country). The proper name was Upper Volta (or Haute Volta in French). In 1984 the government decided to rename the country Burkina Faso ("Land of Men of Integrity") and the flag was changed, adoptin the African colors. The present pattern was adopted on 4 AUGUST 1984.
