VEXILLO-NOTE #1 :
This flag is
sometimes displayed as the 1800's independent Kingdom of Herat,
just like here for example (see bottom page) > www.rbvex.it/asiapag/afghanistan.html
Yet there seems to be NO evidence or clue to confirm it. Indeed : Whitney Smith in the Flag Bulletin stated that the only Afghan flag shown in flag books of the 19th Century has horizontal stripes of green, white and green. It is atributed to “Kauff. Afghanistan”, the Afghan merchant flag. The first appearance was in an 1848 flag chart and this was reproduced in some other charts. One was Naval Flags of Nations, Kingdoms & Fleets by G. Fedbweg & G. Heck published in 1849. But can that possibly be correct ? Why would a country which is land-locked and full of mountains have a merchant shipping flag ? However, from 1749 to 1877 (when it was annexed by the British and later became part of Pakistan), the Durrani Empire included Balochistan, which did have a coastline, though the main port was Gwadar, a possession of Oman from 1783 to 1958. So maybe Roberto BRESCHI is wrong and this flag should be Durrani Empire insted ofKingdom of Herat ???? Chose your side, comrade !!!!

VEXILLO-NOTE #2 :
Notice the most likely situation in Afghanistan prior to 1880 was that there were no national flags. It is generally agreed that there were military flags that were triangular in shape. They were usually red or green bearing the Shahada in white. Some flags also bore the names of the four caliphs and verses from the Koran relating to jihad (holy war).

VEXILLO-NOTE #3 (my preferred emblem for AFGANISTAN) :
The flag of 1974-1978 includes a national emblem, an eagle. The new republic would have wanted to have a flag and emblem that represented some traditions, but with changes from the monarchy. This was most clearly shown by making the traditional black, red, green stripes vertical. The eagle was described as representing the divine bird mentioned in an ancient tradition of the land which placed a crown on the head of Yama, first King of Ancient Afghanistan (Aryana) in about 2500 BC. This miraculous coronation brought about his hailing as king by the mountain tribes. An example of the eagle with crown was on currency issued since 1959 and the former emblem of the Afghan Academy of Science. The eagle was a representative emblem of the original Aryan civilisation. Traditionally, when a tribe chose their leader, or when tribes chose a king, they would gather at a place and let an eagle take flight. Whoever’s shoulder or head the eagle perched on would be designated as the rightful leader. So the eagle on the flag was signifying that the new republic was the rightful successor of the monarchy.
